What if the homework you assign allows a student to discover something on his own? Self-teach?!
You might use a calendar of questions that are based on skills learned in your classroom, but the questions asked have not been covered in the classroom. Instruct the students that they may use the internet, library, or other resources to search for the answer.
Here is an example...
Create a calendar in your word processing program and add questions or queries for students to answer that are based on the skills/topics that you are discussing during the month. The questions can be simple questions with a specific answer or a more thought provoking question that gets students thinking. You can create a page that the student can use to write his answers, as well.
Be sure the questions/answers have not been discussed in class so the student is making his own discovery.
The following day, ask a few students to share what they found with all. Everyone learns...even the teacher!
Happy Teaching!
